Citadel Securities invests $400M in Crypto.com at $20B valuation, signaling institutional confidence in crypto infrastructure.
VC & Fundraising ·
Citadel Securities, the market-making firm led by Ken Griffin, has injected $400 million into Crypto.com, establishing the exchange at a $20 billion valuation. This marks Crypto.com's first institutional capital infusion since its 2016 launch. The funds will accelerate Crypto.com's push into tokenized securities, derivatives, and other asset categories.
The investment reflects a broader pattern of traditional financial institutions building stakes in crypto infrastructure. Citadel Securities previously committed $200 million to rival exchange Kraken in November, while Intercontinental Exchange acquired a position in OKX and Nasdaq deployed $50 million into Gemini. Market participants frame this shift around the potential for blockchain-based settlement of traditional assets and round-the-clock trading of securities and derivatives.
What remains uncertain is how aggressively these institutions will scale their crypto operations as trading conditions evolve. Bitcoin has declined 28 percent this year, and the broader digital asset market stands near $2.2 trillion in total value—leaving open questions about the timing and depth of Wall Street's actual capital deployment relative to these headline commitments.
