Franklin Templeton exec positions agentic AI as crypto's killer use case, projecting a $3–$5T market by 2030 and recommending ETH as key beneficiary.

A digital assets executive at a $2 trillion asset manager has positioned agentic AI as crypto's primary use case, recommending Ethereum purchases to capture the opportunity. The executive argued that AI agents operating independently across transactions will require decentralized blockchains rather than legacy payment systems, citing high fees and slow settlement times as barriers for micropayments. Agentic commerce is projected to reach $3 to $5 trillion by 2030, with AI agents unable to access traditional financial services due to strict know-your-customer requirements.
The rationale rests on the technical mismatch between autonomous agent needs and conventional finance. Unlike traditional AI investment plays—where investors capture value through equity exposure to AI-aligned companies—the thesis holds that capturing decentralized network value requires direct cryptocurrency ownership. Ethereum and its layer-2 networks are cited as current industry standards with the largest developer base and institutional support for settling agent transactions.
Ethereum reached $1,945 on Tuesday, a seven-week high and 27% gain since late June. What remains unconfirmed is whether agentic AI adoption at the scale projected will materialize by the stated timeframe, or whether other blockchain platforms might compete for that transaction flow.
