Circle has launched native USDC and its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) on OKX's X Layer, enabling direct cross-chain asset transfers and expanded DeFi integration on the network. The deployment adds X Layer to Circle's growing roster of supported chains for native stablecoin issuance and interoperability.
CCTP is a burn-and-mint protocol that eliminates the need for wrapped or bridged tokens by burning stablecoins on a source chain and minting native equivalents on the destination. This model removes collateral custody risk inherent in lock-and-mint designs, which have been targets for high-value exploits. The availability of native USDC on X Layer reduces friction for users moving liquidity between networks and lowers the operational complexity for developers deploying cross-chain applications.
The initiative underscores the ongoing consolidation of liquidity infrastructure across Layer 2 rollups and application-specific chains. What remains unclear is whether X Layer integration will materially shift user behavior or TVL distribution in DeFi, or how Circle plans to expand CCTP adoption beyond exchanges and major protocols already using the protocol.
