Kulipa shuts down over solvency issues, stranding roughly 20 partners

Stablecoin card issuer Kulipa is winding down after solvency problems left it unable to keep its card-issuing infrastructure running, four months after raising $9.2 million led by 1kx in early 2026.
The shutdown was abrupt, with cards from partner programs stopping without advance warning, according to WuBlockchain. Roughly 20 partner integrations were affected, including Ready and Solflare, whose card programs relied on Kulipa as their issuing partner.
Solflare said its card had been built to be self-custodial end to end, meaning user funds were never deposited with or held by Kulipa; the card spent directly from users' wallets at the moment of purchase rather than from a pre-funded balance. That structure meant that when Kulipa's issuing infrastructure failed, Solflare users' USDC remained in their wallets rather than being frozen behind a bankruptcy process, in contrast to card programs where the issuer holds customer balances directly.
Solflare said it attempted to keep the program running by trying to help Kulipa find a buyer and exploring options for continuity, and had been reassured the program would carry on before the shutdown occurred anyway. It said the debt load was too deep and the company collapsed, catching even close partners off guard despite those efforts.
The episode adds to a broader pattern in the cluster, with a separate account describing Kulipa's shutdown as following a $6.2 million seed round rather than the $9.2 million total cited elsewhere, underscoring some inconsistency in reported funding figures even as the roughly 20-partner impact and four-month timeline are corroborated across sources, per wublockchain.xyz.
What remains unresolved is the scale and structure of Kulipa's insolvency, including which partners beyond Ready and Solflare were affected, whether any user funds were at risk in programs that were not self-custodial, and what recourse, if any, exists for partners whose card products depended entirely on Kulipa's infrastructure. Solflare has said a new card program built on different infrastructure is expected within a few weeks, though details on Kulipa's wind-down process itself have not been disclosed.
