Tether targets July 2026 for native USDT issuance on Bitcoin through RGB
DeFi & Yields ·
Tether is preparing to bring USDT directly onto the Bitcoin network using the RGB protocol, with a commercial launch handled by UTEXO potentially arriving in July.
The plan centers on RGB protocol version 0.11.1, which would let USDT exist as a native asset on Bitcoin rather than as a wrapped or bridged token, according to reporting from wublockchain.xyz. UTEXO is named as the party expected to carry out the commercial rollout, with the July timeframe cited as the potential launch window.
The move would extend Tether's reach into Bitcoin's base layer at a moment when the company already anchors USDT as roughly 60% of the global stablecoin market, with a market capitalization sitting in or above the mid-$180 billion range depending on when it's measured. USDT already functions as a settlement instrument across exchanges and parts of decentralized finance, and issuing it natively on Bitcoin via RGB would add another distribution channel outside its existing multichain footprint.
The RGB push is one piece of a broader pattern of expansion at Tether, which has organized itself into four divisions covering data, finance, power, and education, and has pursued initiatives ranging from a tokenized gold product in XAUt to a U.S.-focused stablecoin called USAT. The company has also wound down its Alloy/aUSDT synthetic dollar platform, pursued bitcoin mining in Brazil through a partnership with Adecoagro, and taken equity positions in AI robotics ventures, signaling a conglomerate-style buildout well beyond its original stablecoin mandate.
Corroborating coverage in the same cluster confirms the same core details — RGB protocol v0.11.1 and a UTEXO-led commercial launch potentially in July — with two distinct sources tracking the story so far.
Not yet confirmed is a firm launch date beyond the general July target, technical details on how RGB-issued USDT would interact with existing USDT deployments on other chains, and whether Tether will disclose additional partners or infrastructure providers as the rollout approaches. How this native Bitcoin issuance fits alongside Tether's other ongoing regulatory and product developments also remains to be seen.
