Report ties $4.7B in crypto losses to Trump family ventures

Public Citizen finds investors are underwater across five Trump-linked crypto products even as Trump-related income from the sector topped $1.4B.
A new analysis from consumer advocacy group Public Citizen puts combined investor losses tied to crypto projects connected to Donald Trump and his family at no less than $4.7 billion since 2022, with the bulk of that sum existing only on paper rather than as realized losses, according to wublockchain.xyz. The Aug. 27 report spans five separate ventures: NFT trading cards, the WLFI token, the TRUMP token, the USD1 stablecoin, and a bitcoin-focused treasury strategy run through Trump Media.
The TRUMP token represents the largest single component of the shortfall, with Public Citizen estimating $3.2 billion in unrealized losses tied to the asset. Wallet-tracking data from Nansen cited in the report shows that roughly 1 million of the 1.6 million Solana wallets that purchased TRUMP are currently sitting on losses, indicating that the majority of buyers have yet to see their positions recover.
WLFI accounts for a further $1 billion in estimated losses, per the report. Separately, Trump Media's holding of 9,477 BTC has produced approximately $450 million in unrealized losses under the company's crypto treasury approach, theblock.co reported.
The losses stand in contrast to the financial benefit flowing to Trump personally. His 2025 financial disclosure listed at least $1.4 billion in income derived from crypto businesses connected to the family, a figure Public Citizen highlights alongside the investor losses to underscore the gap between outcomes for buyers and for the ventures' namesake.
Multiple outlets have picked up the Public Citizen findings, with at least four distinct sources now covering the report's core figures, including the $4.7 billion loss total and the $1.4 billion income figure. Not addressed in the available material is how Public Citizen arrived at its unrealized-loss methodology for each individual product, or whether the Trump-linked entities have issued any response to the report's conclusions.
