Tether signs MoU with Nairobi Securities Exchange on tokenization

The stablecoin issuer and Kenya's main exchange will explore tokenized securities, instant settlement, and blockchain education through Tether's Hadron platform.
Tether has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nairobi Securities Exchange to explore digital asset use cases, including tokenization, blockchain technology, and digital asset education in Africa, according to tether.io. The agreement centers on Hadron, Tether's platform for issuing and managing tokenized assets, which the two parties plan to use to examine how tokenized securities and instant settlement could work on the exchange.
The pact is nonbinding, framed as an exploratory arrangement rather than a live product launch. It does not commit either party to a specific timeline, technical architecture, or list of assets to be tokenized, and no financial terms were disclosed.
The announcement was also shared directly by Tether on X, corroborating the tether.io release. Coverage of the deal falls within a wider cluster tracking the intersection of securities law and crypto, an area where regulators and market infrastructure providers have been moving toward formal frameworks for tokenized assets, as outlined in a broader explainer on securities from leviathan.news.
The move places Tether alongside a growing list of firms and exchanges testing tokenized-securities infrastructure, though the Nairobi arrangement is notable for targeting an African market rather than the U.S. or European venues that have dominated similar initiatives. Instant settlement, if implemented, would represent a shift from traditional multi-day clearing cycles on conventional exchanges toward blockchain-based finality.
What remains unresolved is how quickly, if at all, the exploratory MoU converts into a functioning product on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, which securities would be candidates for tokenization, and what regulatory approvals in Kenya would be required before any instant-settlement system could go live. Neither party has specified a rollout date or pilot scope.
