Bitcoin's post-quantum security strategy is crystallizing around two complementary technical proposals, according to Protocol Watch founder Christine D. Kim. BIP-360, currently in Draft status, introduces Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) to reduce long-term exposure of public keys and establish a migration pathway for quantum-resistant signature algorithms. Blockstream Research's SHRINCS complements this approach as a SHA-256-based hash signature scheme built to facilitate such migrations, enabling users to move funds before cryptographically relevant quantum computers become a threat.
The two-part roadmap addresses a core vulnerability: as quantum computing advances, current elliptic-curve cryptography securing Bitcoin transactions faces eventual obsolescence. P2MR restructures how signatures are committed on-chain, while SHRINCS provides the cryptographic mechanism to execute the transition. The framework allows a staged upgrade rather than a disruptive hard fork, preserving existing holdings during the switch.
However, significant gaps remain. SHRINCS has not yet completed its formal security proof or undergone independent review, leaving key technical questions unresolved before any practical deployment. The timeline and activation mechanism for integrating these proposals into Bitcoin's consensus rules also remain undefined.
