Coinbase Wallet rebrands to support 'anything, anywhere' trading as a self-custody testing ground for new assets.

Coinbase is rebranding its Base App back to Coinbase Wallet on September 8, shifting focus toward multichain trading and away from social-first ambitions. Ryan Kass, head of product, described the wallet as Coinbase's "test kitchen" for new assets and experiences, enabling users to trade across multiple blockchains without restriction. The rebrand reflects what the company calls an "everything exchange" strategy, with the wallet serving as a proving ground where assets can be validated before moving to Coinbase's main exchange.
The move follows roughly 14 months since Base App launched in July 2025 as an all-in-one platform combining crypto trading, social networking, messaging, and creator tools. Base creator Jesse Pollak stepped back in July after acknowledging that social features and creator coins had not achieved expected adoption. According to Kass, recent additions—perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, support for Solana, and tokenized stocks across chains—exemplify the wallet's expanded scope.
Kass acknowledged competitive dynamics with Robinhood, whose chain currently attracts significant activity, while emphasizing that Coinbase Wallet will remain ready to capitalize on cyclical rotations back to Base. Coinbase says it will continue supporting Base despite the rebrand. Whether the wallet's "test kitchen" function proves effective in accelerating asset adoption across crypto remains unclear.
