MetaMask celebrates 10 years since first code commit and announces plans to evolve into an Open Money platform for global onchain finance.

MetaMask has reached a decade milestone since its initial code commit, with parent company Consensys marking the occasion by outlining an evolution toward an Open Money platform for global onchain finance. The self-custodial wallet, which serves approximately 30 million monthly active users, has grown from a developer convenience tool into a gateway for decentralized finance and on-chain identity across EVM-compatible chains.
The shift toward a broader Open Money platform builds on recent product expansions including the Money Account—which allows users to earn up to 4% APY on mUSD while maintaining self-custody—alongside features like native swaps, DeFi tools, and AI agent wallet capabilities. Polygon's activation of ERC-7715 scoped permissions has enabled builders to request granular access levels for agent-driven interactions, addressing a gap in authorization layers for automated protocols.
What remains to be clarified is the technical scope and timeline for the platform transition, as well as how existing wallet infrastructure will integrate with the broader Open Money vision. The announcement does not specify new product releases, governance mechanisms, or infrastructure requirements for ecosystem participants.
