AI agents could drive billions of transactions onto blockchains, yet the market may be underestimating where value will actually accumulate—with layer-one tokens potentially capturing far less than commonly assumed. In a scenario where agents transact using stablecoins and sponsored gas through paymasters while blockchains serve purely as settlement layers, economic rents flow elsewhere: stablecoin issuers gain from capital inflows and reserve income, agent platforms retain user relationships and routing authority, payment facilitators collect per-transaction fees, and application layers control end users and pricing power. Layer-one tokens receive only a small portion of gas fees as chains compete downward on costs.
The critical question is not whether transaction volume rises, but who collects fees, whether those fees return to token holders, and whether agents must hold native tokens or have everything been abstracted away. Rising onchain activity alone does not guarantee native token appreciation—adoption winners and token price winners need not be the same. Protocols with direct ownership of cash flows, distribution channels, and explicit value-accrual mechanics to token holders present clearer opportunities than those offering only settlement infrastructure.
Several projects align with this thesis: payment rails for agent-to-API transactions, stablecoin platforms positioned for agent micropayments, agent-to-agent service marketplaces, intent abstraction layers, oracle and workflow infrastructure, and gas abstraction services. Which of these mechanisms will meaningfully redirect revenue to token holders—and whether agents will require holding native tokens at all—remains unresolved.
