Coinbase reverses Base App rebrand, restores Coinbase Wallet name
DeFi & Yields ·
After 14 months under the Base App branding, Coinbase has renamed its wallet product back to Coinbase Wallet while broadening it into a multichain trading tool.
The reversal ends a rebrand that had folded Coinbase's self-custody wallet into the Base Chain ecosystem as a social-first "Base App." That framing has now been dropped in favor of the original Coinbase Wallet identity, with the product repositioned around trading rather than social features. The Block reported the change came just over a year after the original switch, describing the social-app framing as having fallen short of expectations.
Alongside the name restoration, the wallet has expanded technically: it now supports more than 10 networks and adds new asset classes, including perpetuals and tokenized stocks, moving the product beyond its original scope as a Base-centric interface. Coinbase Wallet's own account confirmed the update in a post on X, signaling the shift directly to users rather than through the Base App branding that had been in place.
The move sits within a broader reworking of how Coinbase organizes its onchain products. Base itself has continued to expand institutional and infrastructure features in parallel, including a system called Verify Onchain for identity-linked claims in airdrops and governance, and a native account abstraction standard developed jointly with Optimism, Coinbase, and WalletConnect aimed at cutting transaction costs by more than half. Reporting has also described a leadership change in which Cobie takes over the Base app product as Coinbase's Jesse Pollak redirects the chain toward trading, stablecoin payments, and AI agents, suggesting the wallet renaming is one piece of a wider strategic pivot rather than an isolated branding decision.
Four distinct sources are tracking coverage of the reversal, and the corroborating accounts agree on the core timeline: a rebrand to Base App, roughly a year of operation under that name, and a return to Coinbase Wallet with added multichain trading capability. What remains unclear is how existing Base App users and integrations will transition under the new branding, and whether the pivot toward trading, payments, and AI agents will be paired with further product changes to Base Chain itself in the near term.
