Binance adds gold and silver options settled in USDT
DeFi & Yields ·
The exchange expanded its commodity derivatives lineup as metals perpetuals each recorded peak daily volume of $7B.
Binance has launched USDT-settled options contracts for gold and silver, extending its commodity derivatives offering beyond the perpetual futures it already lists for the two metals, according to a Binance announcement. The new options sit on the exchange's existing options platform and use USDT, the dollar-pegged stablecoin, as the settlement currency rather than the underlying metal or another asset.
The launch follows a surge in trading activity on Binance's metals perpetuals, which have each reached $7B in peak daily volume. That figure points to substantial demand for exposure to gold and silver price movements through crypto-native derivatives rather than traditional commodity markets, and it likely factored into the decision to broaden the product set to include options.
Settling in USDT rather than in gold, silver, or fiat currency keeps the trade within the stablecoin's ecosystem, which already functions as the primary settlement and collateral unit across much of the crypto derivatives market. Using USDT for commodity options mirrors how the token is deployed elsewhere in crypto trading: as a stand-in for the dollar that lets traders move between asset classes without converting into and out of fiat.
The move adds to a broader pattern of USDT's rails being extended into new corridors and products, a dynamic already visible in other recent developments, including efforts to open institutional USDT access for banks and fintechs through Swiss-licensed infrastructure. Corroborating coverage of the Binance launch describes the new contracts specifically as commodity options for gold and silver priced and settled in USDT on the exchange's options platform, consistent with the announcement's own framing of the product.
What remains unclear from the available material is how the new options contracts are structured in terms of strike intervals, expiry cycles, and margin requirements, as well as whether trading volume in the options market will approach the levels already seen in the metals perpetuals. It is also not yet established whether Binance plans to extend USDT-settled options to other commodities beyond gold and silver.
