Ethereum staking surged to 43.8M ETH (36% of supply) in Q3, but yields declined to 2.63% as a backlog of 1.39M ETH awaits validator entry.
DeFi & Yields ·
Ethereum's staked supply reached 43.8 million tokens by the end of Q3, accounting for 36% of total circulation, after nearly 2 million ETH were added to validators during the quarter. The surge reflects sustained institutional participation through staking products, yet annualized yields have compressed to 2.63%, down from 2.81% earlier in the period.
The apparent contradiction between rising deposits and falling rewards points to a structural bottleneck: 1.39 million ETH sits in a queue awaiting validator activation, creating a supply-demand mismatch. This backlog emerges as inflows—particularly from institutional staking vehicles—outpace the network's capacity to onboard new validators.
Network developers have begun discussing adjustments to staking incentives in response to compressed yields and declining network revenues. It remains unclear whether protocol changes will materialize, how quickly the validator queue will clear, or whether yield pressure will dampen institutional inflows going forward.
