Mantle has migrated $2.5 billion in assets from LayerZero to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for its Super Portal, marking a significant shift in cross-chain infrastructure choices. This move brings the total volume migrating away from LayerZero to CCIP to $7.2 billion, reflecting a broader pattern of protocol defections following security concerns. Major projects including Kraken's kBTC and Lombard have similarly abandoned LayerZero in favor of CCIP's architecture.
The exodus stems from heightened focus on cross-chain security design. CCIP employs a defense-in-depth oracle architecture with an independent risk management layer distinct from base blockchain validators, positioning it as an enterprise-grade alternative. LayerZero's vulnerabilities were laid bare by the KelpDAO exploit and subsequent disputes over its bridge setup, prompting protocols to reassess their interoperability dependencies. Kelp DAO itself migrated its rsETH token to CCIP following the $292 million loss.
What remains unclear is whether this migration wave will stabilize around CCIP or whether additional competing protocols will emerge to capture market share in cross-chain communication. The concentration of $7.2 billion in a single alternative framework raises questions about whether CCIP itself could become a single point of failure at scale, though its multi-network decentralization model was designed to mitigate such risks.
