Vitalik Buterin proposes EIP-8288 for Ethereum's I-star upgrade to reduce quantum-safe privacy costs and adopt RISC-V as canonical instruction set.

Vitalik Buterin has proposed EIP-8288 for inclusion in Ethereum's I-star upgrade, which aims to reduce quantum-safe private transaction costs by over 99 percent through bundled post-quantum signatures and STARK proofs. Currently, quantum-resistant private transactions cost roughly 10 million gas; under the proposal, they would fall to the low tens of thousands of gas. The EIP would also establish RISC-V as Ethereum's canonical instruction set, a decision Buterin described as significant and requiring careful consideration. The proposal remains in draft form and depends on Frames, a separate transaction overhaul, with neither yet assigned to a specific fork.
